In 1996, the album from which the track, "Perfect" was recorded, "Jagged Little Pill" had Alanis Morissette nominated for six Grammy Awards. With her jagged little album, she won Best Female Vocal Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, and Album of the Year.
The following year, her signature song, "Ironic", won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Quite a sweep from the girl from Ottawa, Canada!
Alanis Morissette wrote songs expressing teenage angst and frustration. In her early years of "Jagged Little Pill," Morissette felt tossed between her deeply entrenched perfectionism, her fierce sexual and intellectual independence, and her increasing body dysmorphia. It could be argued that "Perfect" is a cry for help from her disordered body intelligence culminating in eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia nervosa in her teens.
