Rainy Day People

Gordon Lightfoot: Rainy Day People

Quiz by Sharon Michiko Yoneda

"Rainy day people always seem to know when it's time to call."

"Rainy day people don't mind if you cry a tear or two."

"If you get lonely all you really need is that rainy day love.  Rainy day people all know there's no sorrow they can't rise above."

"Rainy day lovers don't love any others that would not be kind . Rainy day lovers all know how it hangs on a peace of mind."

Rainy day people always seem to know when you're feeling blue.  High-stepping strutters who land in the gutter sometimes need one [a friend] too

When you "fall in a gutter", it means you are having a bad day with bad things happening.

Gordon Lightfoot’s Rainy Day People is a warm, comforting song about kindness, loyalty, and understanding. “Rainy day people” symbolize friends who stand by you during difficult times, just like rain is always there in stormy weather. These are the people who don’t judge or turn away when life gets tough. The mood is gentle and reassuring, offering a sense of hope and appreciation for those who care unconditionally. The song suggests that true friendship isn’t about being there only in good times but about offering support when someone feels down, making life’s hardships easier to bear.

Gordon Lightfoot was born on November 17, 1938. The Canadian singer-songwriter is well-known for his work in the folk, folk-rock, and country music genres. He has more than five decades of experience in the music business and is regarded as one of Canada’s most significant artists. Gordon’s skill was recognized early on, and he frequently sang in the school and church choirs. Before beginning to compose his songs, he later joined several ensembles. His songwriting career took off when well-known musicians performed his work. He then entered into a contract with United Artists and worked with them to make several albums. Later, he joined forces with Warner Bros. Records, where he enjoyed enormous success and notoriety. Despite numerous physical obstacles, Lightfoot continued to tour worldwide and made fans everywhere. Today, we celebrate him and his accomplishments.

Lightfoot received the Order of Canada in 2003, the highest honour for the citizenry of Canada.  In 2007 Canada Post honoured Lightfoot and three other Canadian music artists (Anne Murray, Paul Anka, and Joni Mitchell) with postage stamps highlighting their names and images.
