"I ain't the kind to hang around. With any new love that I found. 'Cause movin' is my stock in trade. I'm movin' on. I won't think of you when I'm gone."

artist:  Gordon Lightfoot

songwriter:  Gordon Lightfoot

release date:  1964 by Gordon Lightfoot for debut album, "Lightfoot"

Gordon Lightfoot’s For Lovin’ Me is a song about a man who refuses to commit to love. He tells his partner that she shouldn’t be sad because he was never going to stay. He takes no responsibility for the breakup, saying, "That’s what you get for lovin’ me." He admits he’ll move on and break more hearts, singing, "I’ve got a hundred more like you." The song paints him as a drifter who values freedom over love. Though catchy, the lyrics show a selfish, almost cruel attitude toward relationships, making it a classic yet bittersweet folk song.

Of his three marriages, two of them ended in infidelity.  In his life on the road, Lightfoot had many affairs.  His third and final marriage was to Kim Hasse in 2024, and they remained together until his death in 2023.  Lightfoot had six children over his lifetime.
