Carly Rae Jepsen (born November 21, 1985) is a Canadian recording artist and singer-songwriter from the idyllic town of Mission, British Columbia. In 2007, she placed third in the fifth season of Canadian Idol and was a part of the Canadian Idol Top 3 concert tour.
Shortly after competing on Canadian Idol, she released her debut album, "Tug of War" on September 30, 2008. Three years later, she released a new single, titled "Call Me Maybe," which met with stellar success with a YouTube video. The popular song went viral getting over 300 million views and reaching the Number One spot on both the US Billboard and Canadian Hot 100. The single also went to the number one spot in 19 other countries. Jepsen signed with Interscope Records in 2012. Jepsen's musical influences include James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, and Justin Bieber.
So why is this song so infectiously catchy? This is what ABC News says:
"Call me Maybe" is hook upon hook upon hook. There is no element to this song that is not super-catchy," said Jepsen's manager, Jonathan Simkin. The melody is catchy. Those synth string lines are crazy catchy. Not a single aspect of this song does not draw the listener in.
The 3-minute and 13-second song...has many elements that composers know make a pop hit and musicologists have identified as signatures of sing-along hits."
